Ibn ʿAbbās said: Those who went down into the grave—he named them all except al-ʿAbbās. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was placed in his resting-place, Shuqrān took a red woolen blanket that the Prophet used to wear and spread out, laid it in the grave with him, and declared, “By Allah, no one shall ever wear it after you.” And so it was buried with him.
Abū Jamrah relates from Ibn ʿAbbās that when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away, a red blanket was thrown into his grave; Muslim recorded this report.
Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid reports from al-Shaʿbī, who said that Abū Marḥab told him, “It is as though I can still see them inside the grave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—four men, one of whom was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf.”
Sulaymān al-Taymī said: After they had finished washing and shrouding the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the people prayed over him on Monday and Tuesday, and he was buried on Wednesday.
Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī stated that he remained (unburied) through Monday and Tuesday until the end of the day.
Ibn Jurayj said: He died in the forenoon of Monday and was buried the following day in the forenoon. This narration is anomalous, even though its chain of transmission is sound.
Ibn Isḥāq related, on the authority of Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “We did not know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had been buried until we heard the sound of shovels in the depths of the night before Wednesday.”
Ibn Isḥāq also said: It was claimed that al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah said, “I took my ring and cast it into the grave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When the others came out I said, ‘My ring has fallen into the grave,’ but in truth I had thrown it on purpose so that I might touch the Messenger of Allah and be the last person in contact with him.” This report has a broken chain of transmission.
