Al-Laftuwānī (1) said: “Abū al-Qāsim ibn ʿAliyak was superintendent of the religious endowments (awqāf) of the congregational mosque in Isfahan. When the accounts were audited, a deficit was recorded against him. Among the waqf’s holdings was a confectioner’s shop, and he had taken from its tenant a large quantity of sweets. People would laugh and say, ‘It seems the mosque itself has eaten the sweets!’
I asked Abū Saʿd ibn al-Baghdādī about him, and he replied, ‘He was a man of merit; I heard nothing but good concerning him. His father was a ḥadith scholar, and I never heard anyone impugn the authenticity of his auditions. A great many people copied from him the Musnad of Abū ʿAwānah—only he was an Ashʿarī.’
I (the author) add: He granted an authorization (ijāzah) to Ibn Nāṣir the ḥāfiẓ, and he died in Rajab of the year 468 AH.
