(1) It was printed under the supervision of Shaykh Ismail al-Ansari at the Qasim Press in Riyadh, 1389 AH/1969 CE.
(2) In both al-Muntazam and al-Irshad the title is given as Tamyiz al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid (Distinguishing the Additions in Continuous Chains of Transmission).
(3) The autograph reads al-khayl (with the dotted kha), but the form adopted here follows Tadhkirat al-huffaz 1/1140 and is likewise retained by Dr. Akram al-Umari in Mawarid al-Khatib, p. 80.
(4) Tadhkirat al-huffaz 1/1140 corrupts the title to Riwayat al-abnaʾ ʿan abaʾihim (Transmission of Sons from Their Fathers).
(5) This refers to al-rihla fi talab al-hadith, printed within Majmuʿat rasaʾil fi ʿulum al-hadith, edited by Subhi al-Badri al-Samarraʾi, al-Maktaba al-Salafiyya, Madina, 1969, and re-edited by Dr. Nur al-Din ʿItr in 1975.
(6) Muʿjam al-udabaʾ records the title as al-ihtijaj li-l-Shafiʿi fima usnida ilayh wa-l-radd ʿala al-taʿnin bi-jahlihim ʿalayh (Defence of al-Shafiʿi regarding what is attributed to him and refutation of his ignorant detractors).
(7) It was published with critical editing by Ahmad Matlub, Khadija al-Hadithi, and Ahmad Naji al-Qaysi at the ʿAni Press, Baghdad, 1964 CE.
(8) This work is a supplement to al-muʾtalif wa-l-mukhtalif by al-Daraqutni (d. 385 AH). Muʿjam al-udabaʾ and al-Muntazam entitle it al-muʾtanaf fi takmilat al-mukhtalif wa-l-muʾtalif, but al-Muntazam misprints “fi takmilat” as “bi kalimat”.
(9) Al-Muntazam lists it as Lahj al-sawab fi anna al-tasmiyah min Fatihat al-kitab, whereas Muʿjam al-udabaʾ substitutes minhaj for lahj.
(10) Muʿjam al-udabaʾ gives the title as al-dalaʾil wa-l-shawahid ʿala sihhat al-ʿamal bi-l-yamin maʿa al-shahid (Proofs and Evidences for the Validity of Acting on an Oath with a Single Witness).
(11) Al-Muntazam and Muʿjam al-udabaʾ record it as al-tabyin li-asmaʾ al-mudallisin (Clarification of the Names of Narrators Who Practise Tadlis).
(12) Al-Muntazam cites it as Iqtidaʾ al-ʿilm al-ʿamal; it was printed by al-Maktab al-Islami, Beirut, 1386 AH/1966 CE, with editing by Nasir al-Din al-Albani, and has since been reprinted twice.
(13) In this treatise he demonstrates that recording hadith is unconditionally permissible. It was published by the French Institute in Damascus in the year
