three white sahūlī garments (a fine Yemeni cotton), with no shirt and no turban. This wording is agreed upon.
In Muslim’s version there is an additional phrase: “sahūlī, made of cotton.”
As for the mantle (ḥulla), people became confused about it. A mantle had in fact been purchased for the Prophet so that he might be shrouded in it, but it was left unused. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr took it and said, “I shall keep it for myself and be buried in it.” Then he said, “Had Allah been pleased with it for His Prophet, He would have had him shrouded in it.” So he sold it and gave its price in charity. Muslim narrated this.
ʿAlī ibn Musher related from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was first wrapped in a Yemeni mantle, then it was removed and he was shrouded in three pieces of cloth.”
A similar report is transmitted by al-Qāsim from ʿĀʾishah.
As for the report of Shuʿayb, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, stating that the Messenger of Allah was shrouded in three cloths, one of them a striped ḥibra cloak—and the like of it transmitted by Maqsim from Ibn ʿAbbās—those who said so were probably mistaken because he had merely been wrapped in a Yemeni mantle that was later removed.
Zakariyyā reported from al-Shaʿbī: “The Messenger of Allah was shrouded in three thick sahūlī Yemeni cloths—an izār (lower wrap), a ridāʾ (upper wrap), and a lifāfa (outer sheet).”
Al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥayy, from Hārūn ibn Saʿd, from Abū Wāʾil, said: “ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, possessed some musk and directed that it be used to embalm him. ʿAlī said, ‘It is the remainder of the perfume used to embalm the Messenger of Allah.’”
Ibn Isḥāq said: “Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās narrated to me,”
