may Allah bless it for you. Inside it were 40 dinars, which I spent over a period of time while seeking knowledge. (1)
Makkī al-Rumaylī said: Al-Khaṭīb fell ill halfway through Ramadan, and his condition became critical on the first of Dhu al-Ḥijjah. He appointed Ibn Khayrūn (2) as his executor, placed his books in waqf under his supervision, and distributed all his wealth in charitable causes and among the ḥadīth scholars.
He died during the fourth hour of Monday, the seventh of Dhu al-Ḥijjah in the year 463 AH. His body was carried out early Tuesday morning and taken across to the western side of the city. Judges, dignitaries, and large crowds attended. Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Muhtadī bi-Allah (3) led the funeral prayer, pronouncing the takbīr four times, and he was buried beside the grave of Bishr al-Ḥāfī (4).
Ibn Khayrūn added, “He died in the late morning of Monday and was buried at Bāb Ḥarb.”
He gave away his wealth—200 dinars—in charity, directed that all his garments likewise be given in charity, and endowed all his books. His bier was brought out from the chamber adjoining the Niẓāmiyya; jurists and ordinary folk escorted him to the Manṣūr Mosque. In front of the bier a group walked, calling aloud: “This is the man who used to defend the Prophet ﷺ from lies; this is the man who preserved the ḥadīth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Several complete recitations of the Quran were performed over his grave. (5)
