and Usāmah and al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAbbās, and they were the ones who lowered him into his grave. While ʿAlī was washing him he kept repeating, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you; you are pure in life and in death.” This is a good mursal report.
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād said: Maʿmar narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said: ʿAlī stated, “I washed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I then looked for the usual signs that appear on the deceased but saw nothing; he was fragrant, alive and dead alike.”
Only four people undertook his burial and the laying out of his body: ʿAlī, al-ʿAbbās, al-Faḍl, and Ṣāliḥ, the Prophet’s freedman. A laḥd-style niche was dug for the Messenger of Allah, and mud bricks were set in place above him.
ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Nuʿmān said: Abū ʿUmar Kaysān narrated to us, from his client Yazīd ibn Bilāl, who said: I heard ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—say, “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed that no one but I should wash him, for he said, ‘Whoever sees my nakedness, his eyes will be blotted out.’ So al-ʿAbbās and Usāmah would pass me the water from behind a curtain, and whenever I handled one of his limbs it felt as though thirty men were helping me, until I had finished washing him.”
Kaysān the fuller is also narrated from by al-Qāsim ibn Mālik and Asbāṭ; his client is apparently unknown, and he himself is weak.
Abū Maʿshar reported from Muḥammad ibn Qays, who said: The one who washed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was ʿAlī, while al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAbbās poured the water. “Whenever we wished to lift one of his limbs to wash it, it rose for us by itself. When we reached his private area, we heard a voice from one side of the house saying, ‘Do not uncover the private part of your Prophet.’” This is a weak mursal report.
Ibn Jurayj said: I heard Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī say, “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was washed three times with water mixed with lote leaves, using water drawn from a well in Qubāʾ from which he used to drink.”
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was shrouded in …”
