Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Sunnah (1), author of the Tahdhīb.

Judge Ḥusayn died at Marw al-Rūdh in Muḥarram of the year 462 AH (2).

That same year also witnessed the passing of: Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Siyāwush al-Kāzarūnī; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad al-Labbād, the Qurʾān-reciter; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tinnīsī, known as Ibn al-Naḥḥās; the father of the Maristān judge; ʿAbd (3) Allāh ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Kubayba al-Dimashqī; Abū Ghālib Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Sahl al-Wāsiṭī, called Ibn al-Khāla (4); the mufti Muḥammad ibn ʿAtāb of Córdoba (5); Abū al-Ghanāʾim Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Gharrāʾ in Jerusalem; and the ruler of the Maghrib, Abū Bakr ibn ʿUmar al-Lamtūnī (6).

  1. Ibn al-Dajjājī Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī al-Baghdādī— the venerable, trustworthy, long-lived shaykh—Abū al-Ghanāʾim Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī ibn
(1) His book al-Tahdhib, dealing with the subsidiary questions of the law, is a carefully edited and polished compendium that, for the most part, omits the proofs. He abridged it from the notes of his teacher al-Qadi Husayn, adding to and deleting from them. Among Shafi‘i jurists the work is well known: they study it, quote it, and rely on it for many problems. It extends over four large volumes; volume IV is preserved in the Zahiriya Library in Damascus under call-number 292 (Shafi‘i Fiqh) and was copied in 599 AH / 1202-3 CE. (2) Al-Nawawi, at the end of his biography of al-Qadi Husayn, records a useful guideline: “Know that whenever the unqualified title ‘al-qadi’ occurs in the writings of the later Khurasani scholars—such as al-Nihaya, al-Tatamma, al-Tahdhib, the books of al-Ghazali and the like—the person intended is al-Qadi Husayn. When it appears in the works of the middle-period Iraqi authors, it refers to al-Qadi Abu Hamid al-Marwurudhhi. When it is used in our works on usul, it designates al-Qadi Abu Bakr al-Baqillani, the Maliki imam in the branches of law. And when it is found in Mu‘tazili writings or in our usul books when they quote the Mu‘tazila, it refers to al-Qadi al-Jubbai. Allah knows best.” (3) The original text reads “Abd Allah,” while Tabsir al-muntabih, 3/1185, has the diminutive form “Ubayd Allah.” (4) His biography has already been given under no. 111. (5) His biography will appear below under no. 152. (6) His biography will appear below under no. 216.
