Al-Bukhārī likewise records the same wording through the route of ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās.
As for the report transmitted by Hushaym—who said, “ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated to us from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said, ‘The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away at the age of sixty-five’”—ʿAlī is weak in hadith, all the more so since other narrations contradict his.
Shabābah said: “Shuʿbah related to us from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, from ʿAmmār, the client of Banū Hāshim, that he heard Ibn ʿAbbās say, ‘He died when he was sixty-five.’”
This report is singular, yet it is reinforced by the narration of Hishām from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Dughfal ibn Ḥanẓalah, stating that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died at sixty-five.
Although that chain is sound, al-Ḥasan himself did not rely on what he narrated from Dughfal; rather, according to Ashʿath, he maintained that the Prophet died at sixty-three. Hishām ibn Ḥassān transmits from him that the Prophet died at sixty.
Shuʿbah also narrated—through Abū Isḥāq, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Muʿāwiyah—that “the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away at sixty-three, and so did Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.” Muslim includes this narration.
The same figure—sixty-three—was asserted by Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, al-Shaʿbī, Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir, and others; this is the conclusion adopted with certainty by the leading critical scholars. Qatādah, however, held that he died at sixty-two.
