Death is a sovereign of overwhelming power;
He overtakes both the drinker and the one who pours.
ʿAbd al-Ghāfir states in his History: “al-Dāwūdī was born in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, 374 AH.”
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Kutubī reports: “He passed away in Būshanj, in Shawwāl 467 AH.”
Būshanj—spelled with a dotted shīn, though some begin it with a fāʾ and others with an unpointed sīn—is a town seven farsakhs from Herat. (1)
Ibn al-Yūnīnī recited to us; Jaʿfar related from al-Silafī; Abū al-Samh the ḥāfiẓ in Tustar recited to us that al-Dāwūdī, while in Būshanj, composed and recited these lines:
In former days the gathering of people
Brought delight and ease of heart;
The matter has now turned on its head—
Ease is found only in solitude. (2)
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAtāʾ al-Ibrāhīmī also said: al-Dāwūdī recited to us:
Once, in companionship, there was light;
Now the light is gone and darkness has thickened.
People and the age alike have grown corrupt—
Peace be upon the age, and upon its people. (3)
