(1) Ibn Khayr lists it in the Fihrisa, p. 226, under the title “Epistle on the Merits of al-Andalus and a Record of Its Notable Men.” The full text was reproduced by al-Maqri in Nafh al-Tib, 3/158-179, and later published by Dr. Ihsan Abbas in volume 2 of the collected Rasaʾil Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi.
(2) This précis was edited by Professor Saʿid al-Afghani and printed at Damascus University Press in 1379 AH.
(3) That work is the “Epistle on the Ruling Concerning Those Who Claim that the Souls of the Wretched Are Tormented Until the Day of Judgment,” published in volume 3 of the collected Rasaʾil Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi, edited by Dr. Ihsan Abbas.
(4) The person in question is Ibn al-Naghriyala (sources differ over the exact spelling). Badis b. Huyus, the ruler of Granada, appointed him vizier after he had first served as his secretary. For his biography, see al-Maghrib 2/114; al-Bayan al-Mughrib 3/264; al-Dhakhira 1/2/761 ff.; and Ibn Khaldun, Tarikh, 4/160-161. Dr. Ihsan Abbas argues that Ibn Hazm’s rebuttal was actually directed against Yusuf b. Ismaʿil, who succeeded his father Ismaʿil in the vizierate; he sets out this view in the introduction to Ibn Hazm’s “Reply to Ibn al-Naghriyala” (Rasaʾil Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi, vol. 3).
(5) This epistle appears inside his book al-Fasl, 4/178-227, under the heading: “A Presentation of the Grave Statements That Lead to Unbelief or to the Impossible, Drawn from the Sayings of the Innovators: the Muʿtazila, Khawarij, Murjiʾa, and Shiʿa.” In the Majmaʿ edition the word al-nasaʾih follows immediately after the word ayat without any separator, which may wrongly suggest that it continues the previous book title.
