and the book Sharāʾiʿ al-Islām, in two volumes; the book al-Mujallā (1), a single volume on jurisprudence; the book al-Muḥallā, a commentary on al-Mujallā supported by proofs and transmitted reports, in eight volumes (2); Ḥujjat al-Wadāʿ (3), one hundred and twenty folios; the book Qismah al-Khums fī al-Radd ʿalā Ismāʿīl al-Qāḍī, one volume; the book al-Āthār allatī ẓāhiruhā al-taʿāruḍ wa-nafī al-tanāquḍ ʿanhā, which was meant to reach ten thousand folios, though he never completed it; the book al-Jāmiʿ fī Ṣaḥīḥ al-Ḥadīth, compiled without isnāds; the book al-Talkhīṣ wa-al-Takhlīṣ fī al-Masāʾil al-Naẓariyyah (4); the book Mā Infarada bihi Mālik wa Abū Ḥanīfah wa al-Shāfiʿī (5); Mukhtaṣar al-Mawḍiḥ by Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-Mughlis al-Ẓāhirī (6), a single volume; the book Ikhtilāf al-Fuqahāʾ al-Khamsah—Mālik, Abū Ḥanīfah, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, and Dāwūd; the book al-Taṣaffuḥ fī al-Fiqh, one volume; the book al-Tabyīn fī Hal ʿAlima al-Muṣṭafā Aʿyān al-Munāfiqīn, three booklets; and al-Imlāʾ fī Sharḥ al-Muwaṭṭaʾ, one thousand folios.
= It was noted above that this work is a commentary on al-Khisal; Hajji Khalifa refers to it as al-Khisal al-jamiʿa li-muhassil sharaʾiʿ al-Islam fi al-wajib wa-al-halal wa-al-haram and states that it fills one volume (Kashf al-zunun, 1/704).
(1) The Majmaʿ edition omits the title of this book, which is the base-text on which he wrote his commentary al-Muhalla, mentioned next.
(2) Edited by Shaykh Ahmad Shakir, and later reissued by Muhammad Munir al-Dimashqi in eleven volumes, collated against Shakir’s copy.
(3) Published by Dar al-Yaquza al-ʿArabiyya, Damascus, 1959, edited by Mamduh Haqqi.
(4) Yaqut lists the book and enlarges its title with the phrase “and the subsidiary issues for which no explicit text exists in the Quran or hadith.” Dr. Ihsan Abbas has also published a treatise of his, al-Talkhis li-wujuh al-takhlis, in vol. 3 of Rasaʾil Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi; it consists of answers to questions such as: What is the best deed by which a person attains his Lord’s pardon? Do major sins vary in gravity? How much knowledge should one seek? etc.
(5) The original reading is “or Abu Hanifa or al-Shafii”; the corrected text follows Tadhkirat al-huffaz, 3/1152, and Ibn Hazm’s al-Muhalla, Book of Inheritance, 9/273, where he says: “We have set aside several fascicles on the matters in which Abu Hanifa, Malik and al-Shafii disagreed with the majority of scholars, on the views each of them held which no one before them is known to have held, and on the cases where each of them contravened the well-established, certain consensus.”
(6) The word “bin” is missing from the Majmaʿ edition; this is an error.
