It is also transmitted in full through Bahz ibn Asad, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, who said: Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī narrated it to us, conveying the same meaning.
ʿUqayl likewise related—from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah—who said: ʿĀʾishah told me that Abū Bakr rode in from his residence at al-Sunḥ on horseback, dismounted, and entered the mosque. He spoke to no one until he came to me, then he went straight to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was covered with a patterned ḥibrah mantle. He uncovered his face, leaned over and kissed him, then wept and said, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah. By Allah, He will never cause you to die twice; you have already tasted the death that was decreed for you.”
Abū Salamah also told me, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, that Abū Bakr came out while ʿUmar was addressing the people. He said, “Sit down, O ʿUmar,” but ʿUmar refused. He repeated, “Sit down,” yet ʿUmar still refused. Abū Bakr then pronounced the testimony of faith, whereupon the people turned toward him and left ʿUmar. He said: “To proceed: whoever among you worshipped Muhammad—Muhammad has indeed died; and whoever worships Allah—Allah is Ever-Living and never dies.” He then recited: “Muhammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed on before him” (3:144). It was as though the people had never known that Allah had revealed this verse until Abū Bakr recited it; everyone then took it from him, and I heard no one thereafter except that he was reciting it.
Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab informed me that ʿUmar said, “By Allah, the moment I heard Abū Bakr recite it I was shaken—indeed, my legs failed me so that I collapsed to the ground—and I knew, once he had recited it, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had truly passed away.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this.
Yazīd ibn al-Hād said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim narrated to me, from his father, from
