Shaykh Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Aḥmad related to us, in a direct audition, from Zaynab bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; she from Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Fārisī; he from Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī; he from ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān; he from Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd; he from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥijjah; he from Abū al-Walīd; he from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Yashkurī; from Ṣāliḥ ibn Sarj ⦗1⦘; from ʿImrān ibn Ḥiṭṭān; from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection the just judge will be brought forward, and the reckoning will be so severe that he will wish he had never passed judgment between two people over so much as a single date-fruit ⦗2⦘.’”
It is exceedingly singular.
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh also informed us; likewise Zayn al-Umanaʾ al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Shīrajī, and Ibn Ghassān, who said: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan the ḥāfiẓ told us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Mustamlī told us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf told us; Ibn al-Aʿrābī told us; Ibn Abī al-Dunyā related to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Madāʾinī told me; Fiṭr ibn Ḥammād ibn Wāqid told us, saying, my father told us:
I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār say: “People say, ‘Mālik is an ascetic!’ What kind of asceticism can Mālik claim when he still owns a cloak and a mantle? The true ascetic is ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz: the world came to him with its mouth agape, yet he turned away from it.”
87 – Ḥaydara ibn al-Ḥusayn, the amīr al-Muʾayyad,
