ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Khusrawjirdi (1), the Khurāsānī.
Bayhaq is a cluster of villages belonging to the district of Naysābūr, about two days’ journey from the city.
He was born in Shaʿbān of the year 384 AH.
When he was fifteen years old he began attending hadith gatherings. He first heard from Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-ʿAlawī, the companion of Abū Ḥāmid ibn al-Sharqī; this was the earliest of his teachers. He missed the chance to hear directly from Abū Nuʿaym al-Isfarāʾīnī, the transmitter of Abū ʿAwāna, but he did obtain from him a written authorization for the traditions on commercial transactions.
He studied at length with al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ and completed his training under him. He also received from: Abū Ṭāhir ibn Mamhish the jurist; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf al-Aṣbahānī; Abū ʿAlī al-Rūdbārī; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī; Abū Bakr ibn Fūrak the theologian; Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Muhallabī; the judge Abū Bakr al-Ḥīrī; Yaḥyā ibn Ibrāhīm al-Muzakkī; Abū Saʿīd al-Ṣayrafī; ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Saqqā; Ẓafar ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān; Abū Saʿd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Mālīnī the Sufi; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Muʾammalī; Abū ʿUmar Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Bisṭāmī; Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb the jurist at Ṭābarān (2); and many others besides.
He likewise narrated from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr of Banūqān; from Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Shīrāzī; and from Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad
