Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and they would trade verses of poetry and reminisce about the pre-Islamic days of Ignorance (1).

Ibn al-Abbār (2) says in his al-Arbaʿīn—and, likewise, in al-Tamhīd the author writes:

Companion of my heart for thirty pilgrimages,
the polisher of my mind and the dispeller of my cares;

Within it I have laid out for you the speech of your Prophet,
rich in meanings of jurisprudence and knowledge;

It holds traditions fit to be followed,
guiding to righteousness and God-consciousness and forbidding injustice.

He is the ḥāfiẓ, the eminent scholar, the firmly grounded authority, the jurist, Shaykh al-Islām, Abū Bakr Aḥmad.

(1) Ibrahim al-Absi is Ibn Uthman Abu Shaybah al-Kufi, judge of Wasit and, as al-Taqrib states, a narrator whose hadith is discarded (matruk al-hadith). Ahmad (5/91) and Muslim (no. 670) in the Book of Mosques, chapter “The merit of remaining in one’s place of prayer after the dawn prayer,” both transmit—through two chains—from Simak b. Harb who said: “I asked Jabir b. Samurah, ‘Did you sit with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He replied, ‘Yes, often. He would not leave the spot where he had performed the dawn (subh) prayer until the sun rose. When it did, he would stand up, and they would recall matters from the jahiliyya (pre-Islamic period), laughing and smiling as they talked.’ ” The same report appears in Sunan al-Nasaʾi 3/80-81. In another wording preserved by Ahmad: “I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ more than one hundred times in the mosque while his Companions recited poetry and mentioned things from the jahiliyya; at times he would smile with them.” Ibn Abi Shaybah likewise records, with a sound chain according to Ibn Hajar in Fath (10/540), from Abu Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Rahman: “The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were neither coarse nor lifeless; they used to recite poetry in their gatherings and recall their pre-Islamic days. If anyone was urged to do something improper, the pupils of his eyes would roll.” And, via ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakrah: “I used to sit with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque; they would recite poetry and speak of the jahiliyya.” (2) He is Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Bakr al-Qudai, known as Ibn al-Abar (d. 658/1260), author of al-Hulla al-siraʾ.
