with the Highest Companion”—until he breathed his last and his hand dropped. This narration is recorded by al-Bukhārī.

Hammād ibn Zayd related, from Thābit, from Anas, who said: Fāṭimah wept when the Prophet ﷺ passed away and cried out:
“O dear father, how near you are now to your Lord!
O dear father, the Garden of Firdaws is his lodging!
O dear father, we announce his death to Gabriel!
O dear father, he has answered a Lord who called him.”

Anas added: She also said, “O Anas, how could your hearts bear to heap earth upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” This, too, is reported by al-Bukhārī.

Yūnus narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: Yahyā ibn ʿAbbād told me, from his father, that ʿĀʾishah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while he was pressed between my chest and my throat, in my house and on my appointed day, and I had wronged no one therein. Because of my youthful folly, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died in my lap I took a cushion, placed his head upon it, and removed him from my lap; then I rose with the women, weeping and striking myself.” (Al-iltidām means slapping the cheeks.)

Marḥūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-ʿAṭṭār said: Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī narrated to us from Yazīd ibn Babnūs that he came to ʿĀʾishah, and she told him: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by my room he would drop a word that delighted me; but once he passed without speaking. I wrapped my head and lay on my bed. He passed again and asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ I replied, ‘My head.’ He said, ‘No, my head—how it aches! It is I who am suffering from my head.’ That was after Gabriel had informed him that his death was near. Some days later he was brought, carried in a cloak by four men, and they ushered him in to me. He said, ‘ʿĀʾishah, send for the women.’ When they arrived he said, ‘I cannot move among all of you; permit me, then, to stay in ʿĀʾishah’s room.’ They agreed. I saw his face flush and perspire, and I had never seen a dying person before. He said, ‘Seat me.’ I supported him against myself and placed my hand upon him; he turned his head, so I lifted…"
