Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah descends to the lowest heaven every night and proclaims, ‘I am the King, I am the King…,’” and he cited the remainder of the ḥadith. (1)

84 – al-Tāni, Abū al-Fath Manṣūr ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī

The shaykh, ḥadith scholar, and trustworthy authority: Abū al-Fath Manṣūr ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Rawwād al-Aṣbahānī, known as al-Tāni, a companion of Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ. (2)

Yaḥyā ibn Mandah said in his History: “He possessed original source manuscripts, wrote down ḥadith, and was among the most prolific transmitters from Ibn al-Muqriʾ.” (3)

(1) The wording continues: “Who is there that calls upon Me so I may answer him? Who is there that asks of Me so I may give him? Who is there that seeks My forgiveness so I may forgive him? He remains thus until day-break.” Muslim also recorded it (no. 758/169) in “Prayer of the Traveller,” chapter “Encouragement to supplicate and remember Allah at the end of the night and the answer granted then,” through Qutayba with this same chain. It was likewise transmitted by Malik (1/214); through his route by al-Bukhari (1145, 6321, 7494), Muslim (758), Abu Dawud (1315), al-Tirmidhi (3498), Ahmad (8/487), al-Bayhaqi in al-Asma wa-s-Sifat p. 316 and in his Sunan 3/2, and by Ibn Abi Asim. All of them relate it from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Abu Abd Allah al-Agharr and Abu Salama (no. 492), from Abu Hurayra: the Messenger of Allah said, “Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains and says, ‘Who calls upon Me so I may answer him? Who asks of Me so I may give him? Who seeks My forgiveness so I may forgive him?’” Ahmad also recorded it 2/264 and 267; al-Darimi 1/347; Ibn Majah (1366) through additional routes from Ibn Shihab; and further chains from Abu Hurayra appear in Ahmad 1/120, 258, 282, 419, 433, 509, 521; al-Tirmidhi (446); al-Bayhaqi, al-Asma wa-s-Sifat pp. 316–317; al-Darimi 1/348; al-Tayalisi (2516); and Ibn Abi Asim (498). The same meaning is also narrated from several other Companions. The nisba goes back to “al-Tanaya,” meaning village leadership; it is also applied to a proprietor of estates. See the marginalia of the Yemeni scholar on al-Ansab 3/13 and on al-Ikmal 1/576–578.
