—Salamah, who said: “During the Prophet’s ﷺ final illness he would keep saying, ‘By Allah, by Allah—(guard) the prayer and those whom your right hands possess.’ She added: He went on repeating this, though he could scarcely give voice to it. This is the sounder version.
Al-Layth narrated from Yazīd ibn al-Hād, from Mūsā ibn Sarjis, from al-Qāsim, from ʿĀʾishah: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the moment of death while a cup of water stood beside him. He would dip his hand into the cup, wipe his face with the water, and then say, ‘O Allah, help me against the throes of death.’
Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm narrated from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “We used to say that the Prophet ﷺ would not die until he had been given the choice between this world and the next. When he fell ill and his voice grew hoarse, I heard him recite, ‘…with those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor—the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous; how excellent those companions!’ (Q 4:69). We therefore understood that he had been offered the choice.” Agreed upon.
A similar report comes from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn al-Musayyib and others, on the authority of ʿĀʾishah, with the additional detail that she said: “Those were the last words the Prophet ﷺ spoke: al-rafīq al-aʿlā (the Highest Companion).” Related by al-Bukhārī.

Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated from Thābit, from Anas that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew gravely ill, the agony—meaning the distress of death—would overtake him.
