(1) For samples of his poetry see Muʿjam al-Udabaʾ, 2/95–96, and al-Dhakhira, vol. 4, part 2, pp. 593–597, among them:
Your love controls my glance and my speech, my public show, my secret thought, my very sense;
If I speak, every word is about you; and if I fall silent, my soul still talks of you.
(2) The full title of the work is Zahr al-Adab wa Thimar al-Albab (The Blossoms of Adab and the Fruits of Intellect), and it has been printed several times.
(3) Ibn Bassam entitled it al-Masun min al-Dawawin; Yaqut: al-Masun wa al-Durr al-Maknun; Ibn Khallikan: al-Masun fi Sirr al-Hawa al-Maknun. A copy is preserved in the Arif Hikmat Library in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. Other writings are listed in the biographical sources.
(4) Ibn Bassam, in al-Dhakhira, gives one date for his death; Yaqut says 413 AH, while Ibn Khallikan upholds the first opinion, quoting Qadi al-Rashid b. al-Zubayr who reports that al-Husri composed Zahr al-Adab in 450 AH—evidence that favors Ibn Bassam’s view. See also Wafayat al-Aʿyan, 1/55.
(5) A detailed biography will appear in volume 19, no. 16.
