The Grand Vizier, ʿAmīd al-Mulk, Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr ibn Muḥammad al-Kunduri, vizier to Sultan Ṭughril Beg, ranked among the outstanding men of his age for nobility, liberality, bravery, and skill in the chancery arts (1). Kundar is a village near Nishapur, and he was born there in 415 AH. He pursued studies in jurisprudence and literature and first served as secretary to the chief magistrate. Rising through the ranks, he was appointed governor of Khwarazm and grew powerful. Later he rebelled against the sultan and married the wife of the ruler of Khwarazm. The sultan devised a plan to seize him, had him castrated for taking her in marriage (4), then relented; he received treatment, recovered, and was eventually appointed vizier once more (5).
