My soul lies slain by the torment of passion—
And how many a victim of love has never been revived!
Wonders of infatuation have gathered upon me,
Leaving my heart imprisoned in a lonely bondage.
A friend who turns away, a censor who moralizes,
A jealous rival who provokes, and a talebearer who tattles. (1)
Ibn Mākūlā (2) said: “Al-Wannī held a foremost rank in the science of prescribed inheritance shares and produced fine works on the subject. He also had a hand in other disciplines and possessed sharp intelligence. I heard Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb say: ‘We once attended the lesson of a ḥadith scholar while al-Wannī was with us. The teacher dictated several reports, and when we rose al-Wannī had already committed a dozen-odd of them to memory.’ ”
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Ḥakīm al-Khabarī (4) and others.
Ibn Khayrūn said: “Al-Wannī died on the fourth of Dhū ’l-Ḥijjah in the year 450 AH. (5) He happened to be in the caliph’s residence when it was raided; the caliph escaped, but several people in the palace were killed. Al-Wannī was struck on the head with an iron mace, wounded in the face, and died from those injuries as a martyr. He was one of the leading imams of the Muslims—I myself heard ḥadith from him.” I add: He was killed during the uprising of al-Basāsīrī. (6)
