The leading specialist in the laws of prescribed inheritance shares, the erudite scholar, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn(1) ibn Muḥammad(2) ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, known as the son of al-Wannī of Baghdad. He was blind, an accomplished arithmetician, and the author of several works.
He studied under Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt, Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn Razqūwayh, and a number of others.
Among those who narrated from him were Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Bannāʾ, Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ṭuyūrī, and the philologist Abū Zakariyyā al-Tabrīzī.
He enjoyed a special closeness to the caliph al-Qāʾim bi-Amri llāh and was frequently in his company. Ibn al-Najjār reported: “Al-Fakhr al-Fārisī told us, al-Silafī informed us, and ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Rasūlī recited to us: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Wannī, the expert in inheritance law, say:
‘I heard al-Qāʾim bi-Amri llāh recite, of his own composition:
The heart is drunk on the wine of youthful longing—
Is there for me a pool of drink that only deepens thirst?’"}
