; and in that same year there also died: Abū Ibrāhīm Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn Maymūn al-Ḥusaynī, Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-ʿAyyār, and al-Muwaḥḥid ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Burrī al-Dimashqī.

39 – al-ʿAyyār, Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad

The venerable shaykh, scholar, ascetic, and centenarian, Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd (1) ibn Abī Saʿīd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Nuʿaym ibn Ishkāb al-Naysābūrī, the Sufi better known as al-ʿAyyār.

He set out on his travels in 378 AH; in Marw he heard Sahih al-Bukhari from Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Shabbūwī (2).

In Nishapur he studied under Abū Muḥammad al-Makhladī, Abū Ṭāhir ibn Khuzaymah, Abū al-Faḍl ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Fāmī, Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Khaffāf, and a number of others.

Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī made selections from his narrations.

Among those who transmitted from him were Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Farāwī, Zāhir al-Shahhāmī, Abū al-Maʿālī Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Fārisī, and several others. From Isfahan, Ghānim ibn Aḥmad al-Julūdī, Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad al-Baghdādī, and Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalḥah al-Ṣāliḥānī also narrated from him.

(*) Al-Ikmal, 6/287; al-Lubab, 1/66 (al-Ashkabi); al-Taqyid, fol. 107a–b; al-Ibar, 3/241; al-Wafi bi l-Wafayat, 15/197–198; Lisan al-Mizan, 3/30–31; Shadharat al-Dhahab, 3/304; Tahdhib Tarikh Ibn Asakir, 6/118–119. (1) In Shadharat al-Dhahab the name “Said,” i.e. the subject of the entry, has dropped out; the text moves directly to his father’s name and also omits the nisba “al-Ayyar.” (2) The nisba derives from Shabuyih, one of the subject’s ancestors, as stated in al-Ibar; in Shadharat al-Dhahab it has been corrupted to “Shabah.” A variant form is “al-Shabubi” (with two y’s), which in al-Wafi bi l-Wafayat appears in the distorted reading “al-Shabuni” (with a nun). For a discussion of this nisba see al-Ikmal, 5/107, note 5, by the scholar al-Yamani.
