Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

he sat upon the pulpit and urged concern for the Anṣār; it was the last gathering he ever attended. Al-Bukhārī recorded this narration. (The word dasmāʾ means “black.”)

Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah said: I heard Sulaymān relate from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr who said: Ibn ʿAbbās used to say, “Thursday—ah, what is Thursday!” Then he wept until his tears moistened the pebbles beneath him. I asked, “O Abū ʿAbbās, what is Thursday?” He replied, “The pain of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intensified, and he said, ‘Bring me writing materials so that I may compose a document after which you will never stray.’ They began to argue, even though it is unfitting to quarrel in the presence of a prophet. Some said, ‘What is the matter with him—has he become delirious? Ask him to clarify.’ When they returned to him, he said, ‘Leave me, for the state I am in is better than what you are calling me to.’ At his death he gave them three instructions: ‘Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula; honor the visiting delegations with the same generosity I showed them.’ Concerning the third command he either kept silent or mentioned it but I have forgotten it.” Agreed upon.

Al-Zuhrī narrated—from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on his death-bed and there were men in the house, among them ʿUmar, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Bring me something to write on so that I may compose a document after which you will never go astray.” ʿUmar replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is overcome by pain, and you already have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.”

The people in the room disagreed and argued—some saying, “Bring it so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may write for you,” others repeating what ʿUmar had said. When their noise and dispute grew in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, “Leave.” Ibn ʿAbbās would remark, “The calamity—yes, the very calamity—was that their disagreement and uproar kept the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from writing that document for them.” Agreed upon.

ʿUmar, however, only wished to lighten the burden on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he saw him—
