my death; and if that were to happen you would spend the rest of your day as a bridegroom with one of your other wives.”

He replied, “No, it is I—oh, my head!—who should be crying out. I even considered—indeed, intended—to send for Abū Bakr and his son so that I might formally appoint him, lest people should start talking or others begin to covet the position. Then I said, ‘Allah will not allow it and the believers will prevent it—or Allah will avert it and the believers will refuse.’” Al-Bukhārī recorded it in these words.

Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah told me, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in while he was suffering from a severe headache and I too was complaining of mine. I exclaimed, ‘Oh, my head!’ He said, ‘No, by Allah, it is I—oh, my head! And what harm would it do you if you were to die before me? I would look after your affairs, pray over you, and lay you in your grave.’

“I said, ‘By Allah, I imagine that if that happened you would come back late in the day, alone with one of your other wives, and consummate your marriage with her in my house.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed at this.

“Then his pain intensified. His illness became severe while he was still moving among his wives, until he was in the house of Maymūnah. His relatives gathered around him. ʿAbbās said, ‘We think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has pleurisy; come, let us give him the ladūn.’ They forced the medicine on him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regained consciousness he asked, ‘Who did this?’ They said, ‘Your uncle ʿAbbās, fearing that you had pleurisy.’ He said, ‘That treatment is from Satan, and Allah the Exalted would never give him power over me. Let no one remain in this house without being given the same medicine—except my uncle ʿAbbās.’ So everyone in the house was dosed with it, even Maymūnah, though she was fasting that day, and all of this took place before the eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

“After that he sought permission from his wives to be nursed in my room, and he left—peace and blessings be upon him—supported by ʿAbbās and another man, his feet dragging on the ground, until he entered ʿĀʾishah’s house.”

ʿUbayd Allāh said: “I related this report to Ibn ʿAbbās and he asked, ‘Do you know who the other man was whom ʿĀʾishah did not name?’ I said, ‘No.’ He replied, ‘It was ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him.’”
