Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Shaʿbī narrated from Masrūq, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:

“The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were all gathered in his presence—none was absent—when Fāṭimah arrived, walking with a gait that matched the Messenger of Allah ﷺ exactly. He said, ‘Welcome, my daughter,’ and seated her at his right— or perhaps his left. He then whispered something to her and she began to weep; he whispered a second time and she laughed. I (ʿĀʾishah) said to her, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ confides in you and yet you weep!’

“When he stood up I asked her, ‘Tell me what he said to you.’ She replied, ‘I would never divulge his secret.’ After he passed away, I said to her, ‘I adjure you by the right I have over you—tell me what he whispered.’ She said, ‘Now, yes. He told me, “Gabriel used to review the Quran with me once every year, but this year he has reviewed it twice, and I see in that only a sign that my death is near. So be mindful of Allah and be patient, for I am the best forerunner for you.” I wept. Then he whispered again, saying, “Are you not pleased to be the leader of the women of the believers—or the leader of the women of this nation?”—and so I laughed.’” Agreed upon.

ʿUrwah transmitted a similar report from ʿĀʾishah in which she laughed because he told her she would be the first of his family to follow him. Recorded by Muslim.

ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām narrated from Hilāl ibn Khabbāb, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When the verse “When the help of Allah comes and the victory” (al-Naṣr 1) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Fāṭimah and said, “The time of my death has been announced to me.” She wept, then laughed. She said, “He told me that his death had been announced, so I wept. Then he said, ‘Be patient, for you will be the first of my household to join me,’ so I laughed.”

Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, who said: ʿĀʾishah exclaimed, “Oh, my head!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “That would indeed be grievous were I still alive, for I would seek forgiveness for you and pray for you.” She said, “Alas, what a calamity! By Allah, I think you love…"
