“…there is no doubt about my hearing from al-Qaṭīʿī; my maternal uncle, the Qur’anic commentator Hibat Allah, had us listen to the entire Musnad from him.”
I said, “Do not transmit (1) anything here until you bring your source manuscripts.”
He then withdrew, went to the Barāthā Mosque (2), and began dictating there. The Rāfiḍah (Shi‘ites) used to gather at that mosque, so he told them, “The Nāṣibīs have prevented me from narrating in the Manṣūr Mosque the virtues of the Prophet’s Household.”
Later the Rāfiḍah assembled around him in the Eastern Mosque as well. At that time they enjoyed considerable strength and openly displayed their zeal, so he dictated to them astonishing fabrications that maligned the early generations.
I say: He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, 447 AH.
In the year before him there died:
10 – Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdūs al-Zaʿfarānī *
Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdūs al-Zaʿfarānī, the schoolmaster of Baghdad.
He narrated from al-Qaṭīʿī (3) and Ibn Māsī (4).
Al-Khaṭīb (5) said: I wrote from him on the basis of his sound audition, and he lived for eighty-nine years.
