performed the eclipse prayer with them—two rakʿahs (units of prayer), each rakʿah containing two rukūʿs (bowings) and two sujūd (prostrations). (1)
Through this same isnād to Abū Yaʿlā, he said: “Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us; ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Salamah al-Qazwīnī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-Hāshimī narrated to me; and al-Shāfiʿī reported the same.”
This narration is transmitted exclusively by Imām al-Shāfiʿī.
Imām Aḥmad had taken it directly from Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym al-Ṭāʾifī, yet here he relates it from one man, who relates it from another, who in turn relates it from him.
459 – Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Ṭabarī Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāhir *
The Imām, the erudite authority, Shaykh al-Islām, judge—Abū al-Ṭayyib Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāhir ibn ʿUmar al-Ṭabarī, a Shāfiʿī and the pre-eminent jurist of Baghdad.
He was born in 348 AH in Āmul.
In Jurjān he heard from Abū Aḥmad ibn al-Ghiṭrīf a fascicle of hadith that was unique in the entire world.
(1) Al-Bayhaqi also recorded the report (3/324) through al-Shafi‘i with the same chain, but Yahya ibn Sulaym was of poor retention. The well-known account of the Prophet’s practice, however, is that in the eclipse prayer—salat al-kusuf—he performed two ruku‘ (bowings) in each rak‘ah (unit of prayer). This version was transmitted by the leading hadith authorities from Aisha, Asma bint Abi Bakr, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Abu Musa al-Ashari, and Samura ibn Jundub.
