458 – al-Khalīlī, Khalīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Qazwīnī
The judge, erudite authority and ḥāfiẓ, Abū Yaʿlā Khalīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Khalīl al-Khalīlī, a native of Qazwīn, was the author of al-Irshād fī Maʿrifat al-Muḥaddithīn (1), a large compendium from which the ḥāfiẓ al-Silafī prepared an abridgement. We have heard that abridged version.
He studied under ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Qazwīnī, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Kaysānī, al-Qāsim ibn ʿAlqama, Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm al-Kattānī, Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhliṣ, Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Khaffāf al-Qanṭarī, Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Yazīd al-Fāmī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, and many others.
He also transmitted, by written authorisation, from Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ, Abū Ḥafṣ ibn Shāhīn, the musnid of Kūfa ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Bakkāʾī—who wrote to him from Kūfa—and from the ḥāfiẓ Abū Aḥmad al-Ghitrīfī, who granted him an ijāza from Jurjān.
His life was long, and his chains of transmission became notably elevated.
Among those who narrated from him were his teacher Abū Bakr ibn Lāl, his son Abū Zayd Wāqid ibn al-Khalīl, Ismāʿīl ibn Mākī, and others.
He was trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ, well-versed in the narrators and their hidden flaws, and a scholar of considerable stature, though his Irshād contains some slips. We read the work to Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Khallāl, on the authority of al-Hamadhānī, from
