Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

the Ḥanafī jurist.

He narrated from Hilāl ibn Muḥammad, al-Mufīd (1), Ibn Shāhīn (2), al-Ḥarbī (3), and their peers.

Those who transmitted from him include al-Khaṭīb, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Kattānī, the judge Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Dāmaghānī, and others.

He was counted among the foremost debating jurists—truthful and of sound intellect.

Al-Khaṭīb (4) said: he told me, “I heard several fascicles of the Sunan from al-Dāraquṭnī, but I stopped attending because he had judged Abū Yūsuf to be weak. Would that I had not done so—what harm would my withdrawal have caused Abū al-Ḥasan?”

Al-Khaṭīb (5) also reported that he passed away in Shawwal, 436 AH, at the age of eighty-one.
