404 – Ibn Sakhtam ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Naṣrawayh al-Ghazzī
The jurist, eminent scholar and mufti, Abū al-Hasan ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Naṣrawayh ibn Sakhtam ibn Harthamah al-Ghazzī (1), also known as al-Samarqandī and affiliated with the Ḥanafī school, performed the pilgrimage toward the end of his life.
He narrated in Baghdad and Damascus from his father; Muḥammad ibn Matt al-Ishtīkhani (2); Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Rāzī—later al-Bukhārī; Abū Saʿd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Idrīsī; Manṣūr ibn Naṣr al-Kāghadī; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ghayāthī; and a number of others.
He left three fascicles of hadith, all of which we have heard.
Among those who transmitted from him were Abū ʿAlī al-Ahwāzī—despite his earlier generation—Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb, Manṣūr ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Samʿānī, the jurist Naṣr al-Maqdisī, Fayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hamadhānī, Abū Ṭāhir al-Ḥinnāʾī, and others.
Al-Khaṭīb (3) said: “He was a man of learning who enjoyed a distinguished standing in the school of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
