on more than one occasion, and he owned a large collection of books which he endowed for public benefit ⦗1⦘. It was he who said to Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, “Why do they keep hurting you when you have already abandoned to them both this world and the Hereafter?” ⦗2⦘

He also composed superb, seldom-seen poetry ⦗3⦘, of which it was once said:
“The encampments are more deserted than the verses of al-Manāzī …”

Manāzjird is located near Khart Bart; it is not to be confused with Manāz Kard, the fortress that belongs to the district of Khilāṭ ⦗4⦘.

390 – al-Tayyānī, Abū Ghālib Tammām ibn Ghālib ibn ʿUmar*
The standard-bearer of Arabic philology, Abū Ghālib Tammām ibn Ghālib ibn ʿUmar al-Qurṭubī, known as Ibn al-Tayyānī, who later resided in Murcia.

(1) Ibn Khallikan states that he endowed the collection to the Great Mosques of Mayyafariqin and Amid; the volumes are still preserved in their libraries and are commonly referred to as the “Manazi books.” (2) See Ibn Khallikan, Wafayat al-ayan, 1/143; al-Safadi, al-Wafi bi-l-wafayat, 8/285. (3) Samples of his verse are reproduced in al-Wafi, 8/285-288. (4) Wafayat al-ayan (with the supplement), 1/144; the same work, in the entry on al-Qali (1/227), notes that Manazjard lay within the Diyar Bakr district. Ibn Khallikan adds that the nisba al-Tayyani probably derives from tin (figs) and the selling thereof, and God knows best. In Hadiyyat al-ʿarifin the name is misprinted as al-Tabbani (with a medial b), while some other sources give it as Ibn al-Tayyan.
