Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Isḥāq ibn al-Salīm, the judge. He studied jurisprudence with the judge Abū Bakr ibn Zarb, and he also transmitted ḥadith from a large number of scholars, among them: Abū Bakr ibn al-Qūṭiyyah, Yaḥyā ibn Mujāhid, and Abū Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn Allāh. He was intensely devoted to ḥadith; al-Ḥasan ibn Rashīq granted him an ijāza in Egypt, and Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī did likewise for him in Iraq.

He served for a time as preacher of Madīnat al-Zahrāʾ, after which he was appointed both judge and preacher in Córdoba while also holding the vizierate. Later he was removed from office and stayed at home, but in 419 AH he was re-appointed as chief judge of the community and preacher, posts he retained until his death.

He was an eloquent exhorter, abundant in knowledge, ascetic and content, distinguished for virtue and humility. Frequent weeping had left its mark upon his eyes, and light shone upon his face. He also possessed a prodigious memory for the reports of the righteous.

He authored several beneficial works, including: The Book of Love for Allah, The Book of Those Who Cry Out to Allah, and The Book of the Night-Vigil Worshippers.

Among those who transmitted from him were: Makkī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀbid, Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī, Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Ibn Ḥazm, Muḥammad ibn ʿAṭṭāb, Abū al-Walīd al-Bājī, Ḥātim ibn Muḥammad, Abū ʿUmar ibn al-Ḥaddāʾ, Muḥammad ibn Faraj al-Ṭalāʿī, and many others.

He died in Rajab of the year 429 AH, and crowds beyond counting followed his bier.
