363 – Ibn Bākūyah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Bākūyah al-Shīrāzī.*
He was an eminent imam, a man of uprightness, a specialist in hadith, and the shaykh of the Sufis.
He was born in the early 340s AH.
He devoted himself to this field and travelled widely in its pursuit.
He studied under: Muḥammad ibn Khafīf the ascetic, Muḥammad ibn Nāṣih al-Karajī, Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdiyy, Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Najīrmī, Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī, Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khumayruwayh al-Harawī, ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Bakkāʾī al-Kūfī, Mughīrah ibn ʿAmr al-Makkī, Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-Balkhī al-Farrāʾ, Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ, Abū Bakr Yūsuf ibn al-Qāsim al-Mayānajī; and in Bukhara he met Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-Qāsim al-Fārisī.
Those who narrated from him include: Abū al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī, his son ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, Abū Bakr ibn Khalaf al-Shīrāzī, ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Aḥmad al-Thaqafī, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṣādiq al-Ḥayrī, ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn Muḥammad al-Shīrūyī, and others.
One fascicle of his hadith has reached me; he also produced several compilations and collected works.
Abū Ṣāliḥ the muʾadhdhin said: “I examined the fascicles of Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bākūyah and found on them no traces of authorized audition; the finest thing I heard from him were the narrated anecdotes.”
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Kutubī stated: “He died in 428 AH.”
