351 – Ibn Shuʿayb, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Marwazī
The Imām, leading authority of the Shāfiʿī school, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb—some say his given name was al-Ḥusayn ibn Shuʿayb—al-Sinjī (2), originally from Marw.
He authored the commentary on Ibn al-Ḥaddād’s work al-Furūʿ, a book considered one of the rare treasures of the Shāfiʿī madhhab, and he also produced a separate work entitled al-Majmūʿ (4).
He was the first scholar to combine the two Shāfiʿī methodological strands of Khurāsān and ʿIrāq.
He studied jurisprudence under Abū Bakr al-Marwazī al-Qaffāl (5), and he was a close companion of al-Qāḍī Ḥusayn (6) and Abū Muḥammad al-Juwaynī (7).

(2) The nisba “al-Sanji” derives from Sanj, a large village in the region of Marw (Merv).
(3) Ibn Khallikan comments: “No one equalled him in this commentary despite the multitude of other expositions; even his teacher al-Qaffal wrote one, as did al-Qadi Abu al-Tayyib al-Tabari and others” (Wafayat al-Aʿyan, 2:135). Ibn al-Haddad mentioned here is Abu Bakr Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Jaʿfar al-Kattani, known as Ibn al-Haddad; he died in 334/945, and his biography appeared in vol. 15.
(4) Abu Hamid al-Ghazali cites this work in al-Wasit. He also composed an extensive commentary on al-Talkhis by Abu al-ʿAbbas b. al-Qass.
(5) His biography has already been given under no. 267.
(6) This refers to al-Qadi Abu ʿAli al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Marurudhi (d. 462/1069); his life will be treated in vol. 18, no. 130.
(7) His biography will appear later in this volume under no. 413.
