348 – al-Barādhʿī, Abū Saʿīd Khalaf ibn Abī al-Qāsim al-Azdī*
The leading Mālikī scholar, Abū Saʿīd Khalaf ibn Abī al-Qāsim al-Azdī, originally from Qayrawān in the Maghrib, was the author of al-Tahdhīb (1), an abridgment of al-Mudawwana.
Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ said: He was among the foremost disciples of Ibn Abī Zayd and Abū al-Ḥasan al-Qābisī, and his work is the standard reference throughout the Maghrib. He settled in Sicily, where his writings became famous and where he enjoyed the ruler’s favor. May Allah pardon him; I have not been able to determine the year of his death (2).
Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ also said: He was disliked by his own circle because of his association with the governors of Qayrawān. It is said that the supplication of Shaykh Abū Muḥammad overtook him, for he used to disparage that shaykh and hunt for his flaws (3).
He remained alive until sometime after 430 AH.

(1) Ibn Farhun states: “He followed Abu Muhammad’s method of abridgement, yet presented it in the order of the Mudawwana and suppressed the material added by Abu Muhammad.” Based on this Tahdhib there are: al-Sharh al-Saghir by Abu al-Qasim Muhammad b. al-Naji (d. 837 AH); an anonymous commentary entitled “Tahdhib li-Masaʾil al-Tahdhib”; a marginal gloss by Abu Mahdi Isa al-Wanugi; and a supplementary continuation by Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim b. Muhammad b. Abd al-Samad al-Bajaʾi al-Mashdali (d. 866 AH). For manuscript copies of the Tahdhib of the Mudawwana, its two commentaries, the gloss, and the supplement, see Brockelmann, Geschichte, 3/290–291. Further works of his are listed in al-Dibaj al-Madhab 9/349–350.
