The erudite scholar, ḥadith master, and man of letters, Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad al-Razjāhī, al-Basṭāmī (1), a jurist of the Shāfiʿī school and a disciple of Abū Sahl al-Ṣuʿlūkī (2).

He transcribed a large corpus from Ibn ʿAdī, al-Ismāʿīlī, Ibn al-Ghitrīf, and Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Mughīrah, and later took the chair to teach.

Among those who narrated from him were al-Bayhaqī, al-Raʾīs al-Thaqafī, Abū Saʿd ibn Abī Ṣādiq, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Fuqāʿī (3), and several others.

He passed away in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, 427 AH, at the age of seventy-six; he was a man proficient in many branches of knowledge.

The nisba al-Razjahi is vocalised in the base manuscript with both damma and fatha on the letter ra. Al-Subki transmits both readings from the author, whereas Al-Samani and Yaqut retain only the form with a fatha. The adjective refers to Razjah, a village near Bastam. (1) A nisba to Bastam, a sizeable town in the district of Qumis on the main road to Nishapur. Yaqut places a kasra under the initial ba, while the base manuscript shows a fatha. Because Bastam is also a man’s name, Al-Dhahabi in Al-Mushtabih distinguishes the town’s name (fatha) from the personal name (kasra); Al-Samani does likewise in Al-Ansab. Ibn al-Athir, however, holds that both forms take kasra, arguing that the word is a foreign term Arabised with that vowel. (2) This is Abu Sahl Muhammad b. Sulayman b. Muhammad b. Sulayman b. Harun al-Hanafi, who died in 369 AH/979 CE; his biography appeared in volume sixteen. (3) Al-Samani states in Al-Ansab that the word is pronounced with damma on fa and fatha on qaf, ending with a final ‘ayn; the nisba designates those who manufacture or sell faqqa‘, a mildly fermented barley drink. Lisan al-Arab explains that faqqa‘ is “a beverage made from barley, so called because of the foam that rises on its surface.”
