so we pointed him out to him.
The young man said, “Respected Shaykh, I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in a dream. He told me, ‘Ask about Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān, and when you meet him, convey my greeting to him.’”
When the young man left, the Shaykh wept and said, “I know of no deed of mine that could make me deserve this, save perhaps my perseverance in reading hadith and my constant sending of blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whenever he is mentioned.”
Al-Karmānī added, “Abū ʿAlī lived no more than two or three months after that before he died.” (1)
Abū ʿAlī passed away on the last day of 425 AH and was buried on the first day of 426 AH.
The last person to transmit through a single intermediary from him was ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Kulayb.
Ismāʿīl ibn al-Farrāʾ informed us; Ibn Qudāmah informed us; Abū al-Fath ibn al-Baṭṭī informed us; Ibn Khayrūn informed us; Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Isḥāq al-Khurāsānī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Saʿd narrated to us; Abū Zayd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah narrated to us; al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from al-Ṣaʿb ibn Jaththāmah, said:
“I presented the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with a wild donkey while he was at al-Bayḍāʾ in a state of ihram. He returned it to me, and I saw the effect of that on my face, so he said, ‘We have only returned it because we are in a state of consecration.’”
The two Imams—al-Bukhārī and Muslim—are agreed upon this report through several chains from al-Zuhrī.
