Abū Sulaymān al-Ḥarrānī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUbayd al-Hamadhānī, ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn Abī Rūbā, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥrim, Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar the Qurʾān-reciter, and several others.
He compiled a Mashyakha Kubrā (Major Collection), consisting of his elevated chains from the leading authorities, and a Mashyakha Ṣughrā (1), in which he cites from each of his teachers a single ḥadith.
Those who transmitted from him include: al-Khaṭīb, al-Bayhaqī, Shaykh Abū Isḥāq ash-Shīrāzī, Abū al-Faḍl ibn Khayrūn, al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad ad-Daqqāq, Abū Yāsir Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Khayyāṭ, Thābit ibn Bundār, al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad at-Tikkakī, Abū Saʿd al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Fānīdhī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jābir ibn Yāsīn, Abū Muslim ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar as-Simnānī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām al-Anṣārī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Asadī, al-Mubārak ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār aṭ-Ṭayūrī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Khushaysh, Jaʿfar ibn Aḥmad as-Sarrāj, Abū Ghālib Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Bāqillānī, ʿAlī ibn Bayān ar-Razzāz, Abū ʿAlī ibn Nabhān the scribe, and many others.
He alone preserved and related certain chains of transmission from a number of teachers.
Al-Khaṭīb said: “We wrote down ḥadith from him; his auditions were sound, he was truthful, and he understood discourse according to the creed of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī. He used to drink nabīdh following the opinion of the Kufans, but later abandoned it. A number of our shaykhs—such as al-Barqānī and Abū Muḥammad al-Khallāl—also recorded from him.”
I heard Abū al-Ḥasan ibn Zarqawayh say: “Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān is reliable.” And I heard Abū al-Qāsim al-Azhari say: “Abū ʿAlī is the most trustworthy person God has created in the field of ḥadith.”
Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Karmānī related to me: “One day I was in the presence of Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān when a young man entered, greeted us, and asked, ‘Which of you is Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān?’”
