his condition. When we reached the next stop, we made our way through the caravan and came upon a Khurasani shaykh surrounded by attendants. He said to us, “Dismount.” We sat, and he brought out a food-cloth; we ate and then went on our way. It continued like this every day—someone would provide us with food and drink all the way to Mecca—while we ourselves had taken along no provisions at all.
In Mecca he taught from the Ṣaḥīḥ, commenting on the narrators and their states, to the amazement of all who attended. He died in Mecca in 408 or 409 AH⦗1⦘.
Al-Humaydī⦗2⦘ said: “He has a work permitting the audition of hadith, and for that reason many of the scholars from the Maghrib shunned him. He also compiled the various chains of transmission for the hadith concerning the helmet in several fascicles.”
He then said: “Abū Ghālib ibn Bishrān al-Nahwī related to us; ʿAṭiyyah ibn Saʿīd related to us; al-Qāsim ibn ʿAlqamah related to us; Bahz⦗3⦘ related to us…” and he mentioned a hadith.

(2) In Jadhwat al-Muqtabis, p. 321, the report is completed as follows: among those who transmitted it from Malik b. Anas in numerous fascicles, though for part of it he relied on Lahiq b. Husayn. – The hadith of the helmet appears in al-Muwatta 1/423, Book of Pilgrimage, “Comprehensive Chapter on Hajj”, from al-Zuhri, from Anas b. Malik: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makka in the year of the Conquest wearing an iron helmet. When he removed it, a man came and said: ‘Messenger of Allah, Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtains of the Kaaba.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Kill him.’” The tradition is also recorded by al-Bukhari (1846, 3044, 4286, 5808); Muslim (1357); Abu Dawud (2685); al-Tirmidhi (1693); al-Nasa i 5/201; al-Darimi 2/73, 221; Ibn Majah (2805); and Ahmad 3/109, 164, 180, 186, 224, 231–232, 240.
(3) Jadhwat al-Muqtabis, p. 321: “Muhammad b. Salih al-Tabari—rather than Bahz—narrated to us; Marar b. Hamwayh al-Hamadhani narrated to us; Abu Ghassan al-Kanani narrated to us; Malik, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar: When the people of Khaybar bade farewell to Abdullah b. Umar, Umar rose to address them and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed the Jews of Khaybar to remain on their property, saying: We will leave you there so long as Allah leaves you. Now Abdullah b. Umar went out to his land in Khaybar and was assaulted during the night—[his hands and feet were injured]—and we have no enemy there but them; they are both our enemy and the ones we suspect. I therefore see fit to expel them.’ Ibn Abi al-Huqayq said: ‘Will you expel us when Muhammad confirmed our stay and agreed concerning our wealth?’ Umar replied: ‘Have you forgotten the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …’"
