Makhūl and Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī transmit—through two independent chains—that the Prophet’s ring was made of iron and overlaid with silver.
A similar report is narrated by Abū Nuʿaym from Isḥāq, from Saʿīd, from Khālid ibn Saʿīd, though Saʿīd did not actually meet Khālid.
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Azraqī relates: “ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qurashī told us, on the authority of his grandfather, that when ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ returned from Abyssinia he visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet asked him, ‘What is that ring on your hand, ʿAmr?’ He replied, ‘It is a ḥalqa (ring band).’ The Prophet then said, ‘What is engraved on it?’ He answered, ‘Muḥammad, Messenger of Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the ring and put it on his own hand, where it remained until he passed away. It then went to Abū Bakr’s hand, then to ʿUmar’s, and finally to ʿUthmān’s. While ʿUthmān was supervising the digging of a well for the people of Madinah—known as Biʾr Aris—he sat on its edge directing the work, and the ring slipped from his hand into the well. ʿUthmān often removed the ring from his finger, and though they searched for it, it was never found.”
Anas said, “The inscription on the Prophet’s ring was arranged in three lines: ‘Muḥammad’ on one, ‘Messenger’ on another, and ‘Allah’ on the third.”
He also reported, “The ring stayed on ʿUthmān’s hand for six years. We were with him at Biʾr Aris when, as he was turning the ring on his finger, it fell into the well. We searched for it with him for three days but could not retrieve it.”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar relates that the Prophet ﷺ wore his ring on his right hand.
Abū Saʿīd reports that the Prophet ﷺ wore his ring on his left hand, a view also transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar.
It is authentically established that Ibn ʿUmar himself wore his ring on his left hand.
