Ibn ʿAbbās related that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying in a single garment, using its extra length to shield himself from the heat and cold of the ground.
Jābir said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed wearing only one waist-wrap, with nothing else upon him.”
Yūnus ibn al-Ḥārith al-Thaqafī narrated—through Abū ʿAwn Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Saʿīd al-Thaqafī, from his father, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray on a reed mat and on a tanned hide. This was recorded by Abū Dāwūd.
Shuʿbah transmitted from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear wool.
Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl narrated from Abū Burdah, who said: “I entered upon ʿĀʾishah and she produced for us a thick Yemeni waist-wrapper and a felted cloak. She swore that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away wearing them both.” Muslim recorded this report.
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Prophet’s ﷺ bedding was a leather cover stuffed with palm-fibre.”
Reports conveying this same purport have already been cited in the chapter on his renunciation of worldly things, ﷺ.
Several transmitters also narrated from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No one should pray ….”
