Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. Al-Tubbānī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī *

The shaykh, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Tubān al-Tubbānī, from Wāsiṭ, a merchant by trade.

He conducted a well-known teaching circle.

He related hadith from: Abū Muḥammad b. al-Saqqā (1), ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-Ghazzāl, and Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Shimshaṭī (2).

Those who transmitted from him include: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Khalaf al-Jummārī, Abū Nuʿaym Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Bazzāz, Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān b. Nafīs, and Hibat Allāh al-Ṣaffār.

Khumays al-Hawzī (3) declared him reliable.

He remained alive until the year 417 AH.

Whoever pronounces his nisba as “al-Bunānī,” with a single b followed by two n’s, is in error.

(*) Al-Ikmal 1/443–444; Sualat al-Hafiz al-Salafi, biography no. 22; al-Ansab 3/19; al-Labab 1/206; Tabsir al-Muntabih 1/173. In the base manuscript, as well as in Al-Ikmal and Tabsir al-Muntabih, the nisba al-Tibani is vocalised with a ḍamma on the initial ta, followed by a light ba, and a nun after the alif. Al-Samani, however, in al-Ansab reads it with a fatḥa and states that, in his view, the nisba derives from a locality in Wasit; Ibn al-Athir follows him in al-Labab. For a useful discussion by the scholar al-Muallimi al-Yamani on this nisba, see Al-Ikmal 1/443–444. (1) This is Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. Uthman al-Muzani al-Wasiti, d. 371 AH; his biography appeared in volume sixteen. (2) This nisba refers to Shamshat. Al-Samani says it is, as far as he knows, a town in Syria on the coastal frontier. Ibn al-Athir describes it as a well-known locality among the Jaziran frontier towns, near the city of Amid, between it and Khabirtrat. The biography of Muhammad b. Jaʿfar al-Shamshati was given in volume sixteen. (3) See Sualat al-Hafiz al-Salafi, p. 27.
