a suit for which he had paid thirty-three camels, and the Prophet accepted it.
Both Ḥammād ibn Salamah and Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated—from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Samurah ibn Jundub—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Favor white garments: let your living wear them and shroud your dead in them.” Ḥammād ibn Zayd added in his version: “for they are among the best of your clothes.”
A similar report was transmitted by Sufyān al-Thawrī and al-Masʿūdī, from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Maymūn ibn Abī Shabīb, from Samurah ibn Jundub.
Al-Masʿūdī also related it once through ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym, from Saʿd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, traced back to the Prophet: “Wear white clothes and shroud your dead in them.”
Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī narrated the same from Abū Qilābah in mursal form.
ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād said: Ibn Sālim related to us; he said: Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr related to us, from Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The finest attire with which you may present yourselves to Allah—whether in your prayer places or in your graves—is white.” Ibn Mājah recorded it.
Abū Isḥāq al-Sabiʿī narrated from al-Barāʾ: “I never saw anyone look more handsome in a red suit than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” In another wording: “I saw him wearing a red suit,” and he mentioned the rest of the report.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ reported: al-Layth told us, saying: ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to me, from ʿArāk ibn Mālik, that Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām said: “Muḥammad ﷺ was the dearest of people to me. After he was commissioned and migrated to Medina, I attended the pilgrimage season and discovered a suit belonging to Dhū Yazan, so I bought it and set out with it to give it to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, ‘We do not accept anything from idolaters except for its price.’ So I handed it over to him when he declined the gift, …”
