And in that same year there also died: the ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Shīrāzī (1), author of Al-Alqāb; the imam Abū Saʿd ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī ʿUthmān al-Naysābūrī, the preacher and Qurʾānic exegete; Abū al-Ṭayyib Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Khalaf ibn Khāqān al-ʿUkbarī, the last person to transmit from Abū Dharr ibn al-Bāghandī; and the Syrian Qurʾān-reciter Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Jubnī (2).
196 – Ṣarīʿ al-Dilāʾ, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Baṣrī,
littérateur and libertine, Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad (3) ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid (4) al-Baṣrī, long-time resident of Baghdad (5).
He left behind a celebrated Dīwān (6).
(1) His biography has already been given under no. 149.
(2) The nisba is vocalised with a ḍamma on the jīm, a quiescent single bāʾ, then a nūn; the bāʾ may also take a ḍamma with the nūn geminated. It is derived from jubn (cheese). This Abū Bakr was the imam of the mosque in the Cheese Market; see al-Ansāb and Tabsīr al-muntabih 1/299.

(3) His name is given as ʿAlī in Wafayāt al-aʿyān, al-Bidāya, Ḥusn al-muḥāḍara, al-Mukhtaṣar, and its supplement.
(4) Al-Bidāya reads ʿUbayd al-Wāḥid, whereas al-Mukhtaṣar and its supplement read ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
(5) Ibn Khallikān says he was known as Ṣarīʿ al-Dilāʾ (the slain of the buckets), also called Qatīl al-Ghawāshī (the one killed by the coverings). Ṣafadī prefers the second for two reasons: ghawāshī conveys the same idea intended by dilāʾ, and the word ghawāshī more closely resembles in sound ghawānī, used in the parallel epithet Ṣarīʿ al-Ghawānī applied to the famous poet Muslim b. al-Walīd.
(6) A manuscript copy is kept in the Ahmed III Library, no. 245.
