Ibn ʿAbbās related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear a shirt that was short in both sleeve and length.
ʿUrwah—through a mursal chain—said: “The Prophet’s ﷺ mantle measured four cubits in length and two cubits plus a span in width.”
Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah transmitted from Muṣʿab ibn Shaybah, from Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once went out wrapped in a cloak woven of black hair.” Abū Dāwūd recorded this report.
Al-Wāqidī mentioned that the Prophet’s ﷺ burdah was six cubits long by three cubits and a span wide, and that his waist-wrapper—woven in ʿUmān—measured four cubits and a span in length and two cubits and a span in width. He would wear them on Fridays and the two ʿĪds, after which they were carefully folded away. This is a muʿḍal report.
ʿUrwah also said: “The garment in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to receive delegations was a cloak from Ḥaḍramawt, four cubits long and two cubits plus a span wide. It remained with the caliphs until it became threadbare, so they lined it with another cloth and wear it on ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā and ʿĪd al-Fiṭr.” Ibn al-Mubārak transmitted it from Ibn Lahiʿah, from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah.
Maʿn ibn ʿĪsā said: Muḥammad ibn Hilāl narrated to us: “I saw on Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik the Prophet’s ﷺ striped mantle; it had two woven borders.”
I add: This mantle is different from the Prophet’s ﷺ mantle that the ʿAbbāsid caliphs circulate among themselves. That one was purchased by Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ for three hundred dinars from the ruler of Aylah.
Ibn Isḥāq remarked that it was the mantle with which the Prophet ﷺ had clothed the ruler of Aylah. Allah knows best.
