Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

The booklet Juzʾ al-Ḥaffār was handed down with a lofty chain of transmission by Ibrāhīm ibn al-Khayr, and—by way of ijāzah (written authorization)—by Zayn al-Dīn ibn ʿAbd al-Dāʾim.

Al-Khaṭīb (1) said: “He was truthful. He died in Safar of the year 414 AH, and we recorded traditions from him.”

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Aḥmad al-Saʿdī informed us; ʿAlī ibn Mukhtār informed us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; al-Qāsim ibn al-Faḍl informed us; Hilāl ibn Muḥammad informed us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us; Abū al-Ashʿath al-ʿIjlī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭufāwī—from Ayyūb, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib—who said:

“The worst kind of food is the food of a wedding banquet: the wealthy partake of it while the poor are turned away.” (2)

(1) In Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 14, p. 75. (2) The transmitters in its chain are trustworthy. Malik also recorded it in al-Muwatta, 2/546; through his version it is found in al-Bukhari (no. 5177), Muslim (no. 1432) and Abu Dawud (no. 3742), all from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from al-Araj, from Abu Hurayra, who used to say: “The worst food is the food of a wedding banquet: the rich are invited while the poor are left out; whoever does not attend the invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.” Muslim likewise transmitted it (1432/109) through Muhammad b. Rafiʿ and ʿAbd b. Humayd, from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, reporting from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Saʿid b. al-Musayyab and from al-Araj, from Abu Hurayra. Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bari, 9/244: “The opening portion of this report is mawquf (ascribed only to Abu Hurayra), but its ending requires that it be marfuʿ (ascribed to the Prophet).” Ibn Battal made the same observation, adding: “A comparable case is the report of Abu’l-Shaʿthaʾ: Abu Hurayra saw a man leaving the mosque after the adhan and said, ‘This man has disobeyed Abu’l-Qasim.’ Such wording cannot be mere personal opinion, which is why the leading scholars placed it in their Musnads.” Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr noted that most of Malik’s transmitters did not explicitly raise the report, yet Ruh b. al-Qasim narrated it from Malik with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ …” Muslim also recorded it (1432/110) by way of Ibn Abi ʿUmar, who said: “Sufyan told us, ‘I heard Ziyad b. Saʿd relate from Thabit al-Araj, from Abu Hurayra, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘The worst food is the food of a wedding banquet: those who wish to come are prevented, and those who refuse are invited; whoever does not answer the invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.’ ” On the same subject there is a report from Ibn ʿUmar in Malik, 2/546; al-Bukhari, 9/210; and Muslim (no. 1429) with the wording: “When any of you is invited to a wedding banquet, let him attend.” There is also a report from Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah in Muslim (no. 1430): “When any of you is invited to a meal, let him respond; if he wishes he may eat, and if he wishes he may decline.”
