al-Sūri, the ḥāfiẓ, say: “I heard ʿAbd al-Ghani ibn Saʿid say, ‘I heard Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashi say, ‘I heard Bunān the ascetic declare: Whoever takes pleasure in what harms him—when will he ever prosper? 1’’”
Aḥmad ibn Salāmah, the Qurʾān-reciter, granted us an authorisation; through Hibat Allāh ibn ʿAlī he related to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Aḥmad, the ḥāfiẓ, related to us; ʿAbd al-Ghani ibn Saʿid related to us; Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Danuqā narrated to us; Zakariyyā ibn ʿAdī narrated to us; Bishr ibn al-Muḍaffar narrated to us, from Ghālib al-Qaṭṭān 2, from Bakr, from Anas, who said:
“We used to perform the prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the height of the heat. Whenever one of us wished to prostrate on the ground, he would spread out his cloak and prostrate on it.”
Ghālib is the son of Khaṭṭāf; al-Dāraqutni notes that the khāʾ in his name is vocalised with a fatḥa 3. The Two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) agreed upon his reliability through the route of Bishr 4.
(1) See Banan’s statement in Hilyat al-Awliya, vol. 10, p. 325, and in Tabaqat al-Sufiyya, p. 293. This Banan is Banan b. Muhammad b. Hamdan b. Sa id, Abu al-Hasan al-Zahid al-Wasiti, nicknamed al-Hammal; his biography appeared earlier, vol. 14, no. 274. In Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3/1050, his name was mistakenly written “Bayan” (with a ya).
(2) The manuscript reads al-qitar (with an r), which is wrong. The correct form is Ghalib b. Abi Ghilan Khattaf al-Qattan—“al-Qattan” refers to his selling of cotton—one of the narrators listed in Tahdhib al-Kamal.
(3) The author recorded the name with this vocalisation in his work al-Mushtabih, and Ibn Hajar did the same in al-Tabsir. In al-Taqrib he notes that the jim is to be pronounced with damm, though some say with fath.
(4) The hadith is reported by al-Bukhari (no. 385) in “Prayer,” chapter: Prostrating on a garment in extreme heat; and (no. 1208) in “Work during the prayer.” Muslim transmits it as no. 620 in “Mosques,” chapter: Recommending an early zuhr when there is no extreme heat. The narrator Bakkar is Bakkar b. Abd Allah al-Muzani. Through the route of Bishr with this same chain it is also found in Abu Dawud (660), Ibn Majah (1033), and al-Darimi, 1/308. Al-Bukhari (542) and al-Tirmidhi (584) also cite it through Abd Allah b. al-Mubarak, from Khalid b. Abd al-Rahman, from Ghalib al-Qattan.
