Al-Khaṭīb (1) said: I heard al-Azhari remark, “Khalaf was a ḥadith master, and Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Abī al-Fawāris was his teacher.”
Al-Musallam ibn Muḥammad al-Kātib informed us; Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr the ḥadith master (2) informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī al-Fatḥ related to me; Khalaf ibn Muḥammad informed us; al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā in Nīshāpūr informed us; Abū Saʿīd al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭūsī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Raslān al-Fayyūmī in Mecca narrated to us; Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī narrated to us; Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Overlook the sin of the generous, for Allah will take him by the hand whenever he stumbles.”
This is a munkar (denounced) ḥadith (3).
I have not been able to ascertain the date of Khalaf’s death; he was still alive a little after 400 AH.
In the year 400 AH there passed away: the musnid of Khurāsān, Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Isfarāyinī (4)—the transmitter of the Musnad of the ḥadith master Abū ʿAwānah; Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿAlī ibn Ghiyāth al-Razzāz al-Baghdādī, who used to claim that he had heard from al-Baghawī; and the Andalusian ascetic, Shaykh Sulaymān ibn Banaj Mālaʿan
