ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs related—from Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Ḥassān ibn Thābit. Ḥassān had sprinkled water over the courtyard of his fortress, and his companions were seated in two rows. A slave-girl named Sīrīn was moving back and forth between the two lines, singing to them while playing her lute. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came by, he neither ordered them to stop nor forbade them. In her song she was chanting:
“Tell me, alas, is there any sin
if I should amuse myself awhile?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, “There is no sin, God willing.”
(As for) Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: he was a Madinan; Ibn al-Madīnī and others deemed him unreliable.
Bakr ibn Muḍar narrated—from Ibn al-Hād, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Salamah—that ʿĀʾishah said: “The Abyssinians entered the mosque playing. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, ‘Would you like to watch them?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Come.’ He stood at the doorway; I came, rested my chin on his shoulder, and pressed my face against his cheek. Among the words they were chanting that day were: ‘Abū’l-Qāsim is good.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘That is enough.’ I said, ‘Do not rush, Messenger of Allah.’ It was not that I enjoyed gazing at them; rather, I wished the other women to know the high regard he had for me and my nearness to him.”
In one of the chains it adds: “He would not leave until I was the one who chose to leave. So measure what befits a young girl, keen on recreation.”
Another version reads: “The Abyssinians were in the mosque playing with their spears and performing their dance.”
Zayd ibn Ḥabbāb reported: Khārijah ibn ʿAbd Allāh told me—he said: Yazīd ibn Rumān narrated from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we heard shouting and the voices of children. He stood up, and there was an Abyssinian woman dancing while the children gathered around her. He said, ‘ʿĀʾishah, come and look.’ I came and placed my chin upon his noble shoulder ﷺ,”}
